Four young recruits about to be sent to Vietnam confront their prejudicial feelings toward one another when it’s learned one of them is homosexual. This is an intense movie, shot in close quarters which help add to the tension. It’s a thought provoking movie involving issues of sexuality, sex, race and fear. In this movie’s case, fear of oneself.

Matthew Modine stars; Guy Boyd, George Dzundza, David Alan Grier,Mitchell Lichtenstein, Matthew Modine, Michael Wright all give great performances. In fact they appear to all have won the 1983 Vinice Film Festival Best Actor award. There is no love story or gay sex in this. It’s more about personal differences in a stressful and fearful situation, one of which being a relatively openly gay man among the 4 boys.

This Fox made-for-TV drama stars a young Jim Carrey as the alcoholic brother to groom-to-be and perfect son Matt (William McNamara). Matt brings home fiancée Allison (Lori Loughlin of TV’s “Full House”) to meet his supposedly apple-pie family. What starts out as a celebration quickly turns into massive dysfunction, which threatens Matt’s family, his nuptials and his sanity as he comes to terms with his possible homosexuality. Mambo Italiano is a very fun, entertaining flick illustrating the drama involved in being gay, coming out and in a relationship in an Italian family. The cast includes Paul Sorvino, Luke Kirby, Peter Miller, and Ginette Reno. The two male leads are hot and all the characters really bring the story to life. I really enjoyed this movie. Here’s the synopsis from IMDb; Angelo Barberini is the oddball son of Italian immigrants Gino and Maria, who inadvertently ended up in Canada rather than the States. Angelo shocks his parents by moving out on his own without getting married, and shocks them further still when he reveals that he’s gay. But his boyfriend, policeman Nino Paventi isn’t as ready to come out of the closet — especially not to his busybody mother, Lina.

A really good movie! Two young boys (Mew and Tong) are best friends living quiet family lives in Bangkok. Their lives are disrupted when Tong’s older sister, Siam goes missing on a jungle trip. The shattered family moves away, separating the boys. Years later, now in their late teens, the boys meet again. One of them is now the leader of an aspiring boy band whose managing assistant bears a striking resemblance to the lost sister. The boys must deal with their family and social lives and their feelings for each other. I thought this movie was really well done and had some depth to it. It’s pretty long but in this case, that’s a great thing. It builds more conflict and is just a great story. Watching Tong’s father fall into severe depression/grief is so powerful as is watching his mother try to hold the family together. There are so many sub-plots which help make this a great movie. Newcastle Movie

Newcastle is primarily a movie about surfing and has an interesting gay storyline interwoven throughout. The gay guy is VERY hot and it’s kind of cool to see a movie that is not “gay only” and does other things. The only negative is it’s kind of hard to understand what they’re saying sometimes because of the Australian accent. But it’s not bad enough to not get the movie.
